Native to north-central Mexico, its flowers bloom in early spring and require cross-pollination. The Latin name, "multicostatus," directly translates to "many ribs," easily drawing attention to its captivating, sculpted form. This is an exceptionally easy-to-care-for cactus species 🌵. | Morphological Characteristics | Thousand Waves Cacti are typically solitary, with cylindrical stems measuring 9-10 cm in diameter and 25-30 cm in height, a deep green color. They feature 13-21 ribs, 20-30 radial spines, and 7-15 central spines, each about 2 cm long and reddish-brown. The flowers are typically purplish-red. | Care Instructions | Thousand Waves Cacti require well-draining soil and thrive in warm, dry, and sunny environments (they enjoy full sun, but need shade during hot summers). Water thoroughly when the soil is completely dry. Reduce watering in winter and keep the soil relatively dry. They are relatively cold-hardy (down to -5°C in winter), drought-tolerant, and can handle partial shade, but are susceptible to waterlogging. Young seedlings are sensitive to excessive dryness and strong light. Repotting is necessary as they grow. Once the cactus reaches a diameter of 10 cm, growth slows, and a new transplanting schedule, ideally every 2-3 years, is recommended.
