A Glimpse of Memory My fondness for walnut cookies stems from Grandma. They were her favorite treat, a cherished memory. A small neighborhood store sold them in packs of six for NT$40. She would carefully retrieve a bill from her coin purse, a worn NT$50 note folded in half, then in half again. I'd eagerly volunteer to buy them for her, knowing the change could get me a pack of Doublemint gum. Grandma's coin purse was old and small, its patterns barely discernible. It carried a faint scent of medicinal balm and menthol, much like the aroma of her clothes. Walnut cookies were Grandma's favorite. I like to think I was hers too.
