Traditional Chinese characters, rendered in running, regular, seal, and clerical scripts, are artfully arranged to form the shapes of Taiwan's native fauna. Four distinct motifs are featured: the Formosan Sika Deer, the Formosan Black Bear, the Formosan Landlocked Salmon, and the Formosan Blue Admiral butterfly.
【Formosan Sika Deer】
A subspecies endemic to Taiwan. Named for the white, plum-blossom-like spots on its back, bucks are typically larger and grow antlers in their second year, adding a new branch each year until after the age of five; does are smaller and hornless. They inhabit hilly woodlands and grasslands below 200 meters in elevation. During the Spanish and Dutch colonial periods, the high demand for deerskin led to extensive hunting, pushing them to the brink of extinction. By 1969, habitat destruction and rampant poaching further decimated wild populations, bringing them close to extinction in the wild. Current wild populations in Kenting National Park and on Green Island originate from captive breeding and reintroduction programs.
