This changed in the early 20th century during an air show in Paris. A pilot's metal button popped off during a performance, and it happened to roll into the engine, causing a catastrophic accident that destroyed the aircraft and claimed the pilot's life. The French Ministry of Defense began searching for an alternative to buttons. Gideon Sundback recommended the Talon zippers produced by his factory. After testing and consideration by the French Ministry of Defense, zippers were adopted for pilot jackets. As a zipper favored by the military, it gained widespread recognition and popularity, capturing a significant share of the zipper market at the time.
