For the first step, I decided to carve the entire surface of the traditional chrysanthemum pattern. Kiku-tsunagi (connected chrysanthemums) is a traditional pattern that is imbued with auspicious meanings such as longevity, health, and freedom from illness. It is also a pattern that represents dignity, nobility, and sophistication, and taking these meanings into consideration, it is a high-grade pattern that is often used as a gift. I thought that a standard size chrysanthemum connection would not be interesting, so I cut the chrysanthemum connection to a size that only a fairly experienced craftsman could cut. Chrysanthemum-shaped paperweight, fine cut I think you can see the detail in the photos. From an artisanal perspective, as you can see in the photo above, the edges of the circle of the paperweight are curved and cannot be carved out with the naked eye. This structure makes it a nightmare for craftsmen because if they rely on their eyes and try to cut a straight line visually, they will end up cutting a curved line. In this case, don't trust your eyesight, trust the feeling of your hands when carving. I don't think there are many craftsmen in Japan who can carve this size of chrysanthemum connection by hand, so I think this is a piece worth considering as a special paperweight. It is elaborately made and its size makes it easy to make mistakes when cutting, so it is probably not often seen even in Japan.
