Founded in the 24th year of the Meiji era (1891), Unsodo began as a publisher of art books utilizing woodblock printing techniques. The company name was bestowed by the literati painter Tomioka Tessai, who inscribed the characters "芸, 香草也" (Gei, a fragrant herb). "Gei" refers to the rue family, a perennial herbaceous plant, known in Chinese as "芸香" (yúnxiāng). The simplified Chinese character "芸" (yún) is a homophone of the traditional Chinese character "藝" (yì). In the 7th year of the Taisho era (1918), the Tokyo store was opened, engaging in the publication of reference books and photo collections for kimono accessories and craft patterns, as well as the production of woodblock prints for appreciation. Today, only a handful of woodblock printing publishers remain in Kyoto and Tokyo. Among them, Unsodo is the sole Japanese publisher of hand-pulled woodblock print *watoji* (traditional Japanese binding) books, and continues to produce many复刻版 (fùkèbǎn - reproduced editions) of existing works.
