It is so coded into childhood imagery that drawing it accurately requires a kind of deliberate effort — putting aside the symbol to look at the actual thing. The white flecks are not part of the cap. They are torn remnants of the universal veil — the membrane that encloses the whole young mushroom — which the expanding cap shreds and carries upward as it grows. On an older specimen, or after heavy rain, they can wash away entirely, leaving just a plain scarlet cap. I drew them as the loose, peeling scraps they really are, rather than the neat polka dots of the storybooks. The ring on the stem is a remnant of a different membrane; so is the swollen, cupped base. The entire anatomy of the thing is about breaking out of its own casing. It grows in a specific kind of partnership: in the birch and pine forests of the northern hemisphere, and in spruce forests on mountain slopes. Nowhere else reliably. The connection between the fly agaric and the birch tree is intimate and exclusive in a way that most woodland mushrooms are not.
