1895 Viper Compendium

The original stones for lithography are said to be found only in Solenhofen, Southern Germany. This printing technique was invented in 1798 by the Austrian composer Alois Senefelder (1771-1834), marking the origin of planography. Due to the labor-intensive printing process, the original artwork had to be redrawn after each print run, leading to its eventual obsolescence in the printing industry. Consequently, each printed image possesses a delicacy akin to hand-drawing. Today, each print is valued almost as a work of art, even though the technique itself has been phased out by commercial printing.
