◎Lapis lazuli is one of the seven treasures of Buddhism, and its color is the body color of Medicine Buddha in Tibetan Buddhism. Lapis lazuli is mainly composed of four natural minerals: Lazulite (deep blue), Sodalite (white), Hauynite (light blue), and Noselite. The golden flecks on the surface of lapis lazuli are pyrite. The white streaks are due to a higher content of sodalite. Therefore, lapis lazuli with minimal gold and white flecks, and a deep blue hue, is considered superior quality.
How to identify if lapis lazuli is dyed?
Many lapis lazuli stones on the market are heat-treated and dyed. You can determine if a stone has been baked and dyed by soaking it in alcohol; if it loses color, it is dyed. Lapis lazuli with excessive gold flecks or white patches (indicating a high sodalite content) is considered lower quality. Conversely, minimal gold and white flecks signify high-grade lapis lazuli. Similar to Nanhong agate, it is rare to find larger lapis lazuli stones with minimal gold and white flecks. Most lapis lazuli stones exceeding 10mm will have white patches or dots from sodalite.
Many lapis lazuli stones on the market are heat-treated and dyed. You can determine if a stone has been baked and dyed by soaking it in alcohol; if it loses color, it is dyed. Heavily dyed stones will immediately lose color when exposed to alcohol. Some lightly dyed stones may not immediately lose color, but prolonged immersion will reveal color differences. However, this testing method is not recommended for frequent use, as lapis lazuli is sensitive to prolonged exposure to corrosive alcohol and intense sunlight, both of which can affect its color and luster.
How to care for lapis lazuli? What are its taboos?
Lapis lazuli is most sensitive to high temperatures. Intense light can affect its luster and color, so it's important to avoid direct sunlight during outdoor activities. Additionally, prolonged soaking is not recommended for lapis lazuli (unlike Tridacna shell), as its porous structure can be damaged by water absorption, affecting its color and appearance. Therefore, remove lapis lazuli jewelry before showering. Avoid contact with acidic and alkaline chemicals such as shampoos, body lotions, cosmetics, and perfumes, as they can cause chemical reactions and corrosion on the surface of the stone.
