The lengthy tanning process, lower degree of automation, and need for highly skilled artisans make vegetable-tanned leather considerably more expensive, limiting its widespread adoption. Due to its high cost, vegetable-tanned leather accounts for only 20% of the world's leather production, with chrome-tanned leather making up the remaining 80%. Unfortunately, for the inexperienced eye, distinguishing it solely by sight can be challenging. However, you can always trust your sense of smell; vegetable-tanned leather emits a rich, distinct leather aroma. Synthetic imitation leather, often plastic-based, lacks this characteristic "leather scent." Leather products made with other tanning methods rarely possess this quality.
