Collection description
Monk Huaisu (active in the second half of the eighth century), whose common surname was Qian and whose courtesy name was Zangzhen, was from Changsha (some say Lingling), Hunan. He was famous in his hometown for his cursive calligraphy. Later he went north to Chang'an. Contemporary celebrities sent poems to praise him one after another. Dingsi Dingsi (777) of the Dali Dynasty excerpted the poems sent by various families and Yan Zhenqing's preface, and published it in this volume. Some of the poems in the volume describe the beauty of Huaisu's cursive calligraphy using natural objects and exaggerated words; others praise him for inheriting Zhang Xu's madness and pursuing the wild and bizarre state. The entire volume is made with fine strokes of fine brushstrokes, continuous strokes, and strange changes. It is truly the ultimate expression of the art of cursive calligraphy.
