Spring Couplets & Dou Fang
There's a custom during the Spring Festival and Dragon Boat Festival to hang images of roosters on doors. Why?
Since ancient times, the rooster has been revered as a creature symbolizing the masculine, warding off evil.
The rooster represents the sun, masculinity, and the power to repel ghosts and ward off evil. It is also considered a divine bird that can summon souls, with the phoenix being an evolution of this symbolism. This illustrates the rooster's important status in folk culture.
Furthermore, the pronunciation of "ji" (chicken) is a homophone for "ji" (auspicious), connecting it to phrases like "jí xiáng rú yì" (wishing you good fortune) and "jí lì" (auspicious).
What a wonderfully auspicious animal!
The design of these dou fang originates from traditional paper-cutting patterns from Datong, Shanxi.
Surrounding the rooster imagery are motifs such as peaches, Buddha's hand citron, and pomegranates, symbolizing blessings, longevity, and abundant offspring.
Capable of warding off evil while bestowing good fortune, longevity, and numerous descendants, it's no wonder roosters are beloved motifs for spring couplets.
