The Story Behind the "Stitched" Pattern | Shin-Shu House, Hsinchu's First Department Store
Early last year, we received a design commission from the "Or " collective in Hsinchu. They took on the renovation of the former Shin-Shu House, Hsinchu's very first department store, a space that is also a private heritage building. They invited Jianjian to co-create a limited-edition opening product. Or has been deeply rooted in Hsinchu for many years, with spaces like the Or Craft Showcase, Or Travel, and Or Bookstore.
Once, I saw a handmade patchwork bag made by a friend online. It featured various pieces of plant-dyed fabric, meticulously stitched together with beautiful thread. Each colorful patch was joined by a dotted line, which immediately reminded me of the "hundred-patch quilt" (Bainapo). In early agricultural societies, there was a custom of making these quilts. When a child had their first month celebration, friends and relatives would each gift a palm-sized piece of cloth. The child's mother would then stitch these scraps together to make clothes or a quilt for the baby. This symbolized the child growing up wearing clothes from many families and sleeping under quilts from many families, ensuring they would be easy to raise and not spoiled. I used these dotted lines to represent the bricks on the exterior walls, symbolizing a space that starts anew, embracing the blessings of everyone's contributions.
The birth of a building is a hope for people to meet. This former department store welcomed people and things from all walks of life. I liken the traces of hand-stitching to encounters and reunions, anticipating that everything that has happened in the past and everything that will happen in the future will converge once again at the Shin-Shu House.
