**African Lion**
The African lion carries a gene for albinism, enabling the birth of white lions. These white lions are not albinos; their eyes are typically light blue, not the red associated with a lack of pigment. They can reproduce just like ordinary lions. Some scientists once theorized that white lions might be an ancient breed from the ice age, with white fur serving as camouflage in snowy landscapes. Although this ancient breed has disappeared, the gene for white fur persists within a small number of African lions.
Despite their rarity, white lions are not adequately protected. Their white fur makes it difficult for wild white lions to hunt, and to make matters worse, after Europeans discovered them in the 1970s, they began hunting them for sport or capturing them for commercial gain, pushing white lions towards extinction.
**IUCN Status: Vulnerable (VU)**
