An Introduction to Golden Brocade Weaving
Golden brocade (Kinran) is a general term for fabrics woven with gold leaf. Fabrics woven with gold threads are called "Kinji Kinran," known as "Zhijin" in China. Fabrics using silver threads instead of gold threads are called "Ginran."
The production of golden brocade dates back to the Song Dynasty in China. In Japan, it was officially adopted as a domestic weaving technique after being introduced from the Ming Dynasty during the Tensho era (1573-1592), with Kyoto's Nishijin-ori being its representative.
Golden brocade is a luxurious and ornate type of fabric, holding a distinguished position among precious antique textiles, favored by tea masters, samurai, and the aristocracy.
