The dragonfly eye glass bead from the Warring States period is an ancient ornament commonly known as the dragonfly eye. Crafted from glass, or more specifically, lustrous glass, these beads were later embedded with concentric circles to create an "eye" effect resembling that of a dragonfly. The "eye" culture is believed to have originated from Western Asia or India, associated with beliefs in warding off evil spirits, particularly prevalent among nomadic pastoral communities. Wearing these glass beads during nomadic migrations served a dual purpose, acting as a talisman against evil and being readily exchangeable for needed items.
Lustrous glass, known as "liuli" or "liulin" in ancient times, is a unique artistic craft developed on the foundation of traditional Chinese glassmaking. According to records in "Guangya" and "Yunjí," for a considerable period, "liuli" was a collective term for glass beads made by firing glass and other transparent materials. Often referred to as "material vessels," they were historically used to imitate jadeite, agate, lapis lazuli, and other gemstones. They are also known as "ancient glassware."
Richly colored lustrous glass beads were highly favored by ancient Chinese nobility, creating a substantial social demand. The dragonfly eye beads are characterized by a spherical bead adorned with circular patterns resembling dragonfly eyes. These patterns incorporate blue, yellow, and white concentric circles, along with diamond-shaped motifs formed by small white or blue dots.
