Masks are ancient traditions and wisdom.
The dancers dance out the rhythm of life,
This work depicts the cultural essence of the Makonde people.
The Makonde people are famous for their exquisite masks and dances.
In many ceremonies, they dance wearing masks.
For example, wearing a female body with a scar on the abdomen,
While wearing a female face mask,
Performing the act of mating and the pain of childbirth,
Prepare young men and women for marriage.
Most helmets and masks represent ancestors, gods and animals.
Often with exaggerated features such as eyebrows, eyelashes, and real hair,
And the expressions are lifelike.
These masks are used in dances and rituals.
It is also an important sculpture work in Africa today.
In this painting,
Max Kamundi uses strong colors and complex geometric shapes.
Showing the cultural essence of the Makonde people - masks and dances.
We seem to hear the drums and see the rhythm in the painting.
Feel that ancient and mysterious power.

Max Kamundi was born in Ndanda in southern Tanzania in 1971 and grew up with artists such as Sayuki in a community where the arts flourished. At the age of 18, Max moved to Dar es Salaam and later to Nairobi, Kenya, where he spent four years painting and also traveled to Germany to participate in large-scale murals.
Max’s style goes beyond typical Tanzanian features, developing unique compositions, one of which crowds large canvases with figures, animals and objects, and another of which features symmetrical circles combined to create the illusion of different perspectives.
Max is one of the most famous artists in Tanzania. His style is imitated by many people and he has many students from south to north of Tanzania.
