As exhibitions become a trend, the high frequency of curatorial events in cities symbolizes the continuous growth of Taiwan's cultural dynamism. After each exhibition, which lasts only 3-5 days, where do these main visual outputs, symbols of the cultural landscape, end up? Incinerators? Fish farms? Or perhaps as waste occupying significant storage space for exhibition organizers? Yet, aren't the main visuals of every exhibition the crystallization of creative minds? The REBIRTH project is about to give them a second life!
Since the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Act was passed in 2010, cultural activities across Taiwan have flourished, with Taipei City experiencing a growth rate of 116% annually (from 340 events in 2009 to 1355 in 2019). Calculating the total number of events held in venues under the Taipei City Cultural and Creative Industries Foundation, over the past decade, the accumulated area is equivalent to more than 4.7 Songshan Cultural and Creative Parks. If we consider the cultural events organized by the Ministry of Culture nationwide, the cultural outputs over the past decade have accumulated an area equivalent to 357 Songshan Parks. Has attending exhibitions become fast fashion?!
