In architecture, cutting an opening into a wall creates light and shadow. The way windows and openings are placed can completely change the character of a space. Pumpkin brings that idea into a bowl. Into its soft, rounded form, we carved openings of many sizes, one by one. As the light shifts, the shadows in each opening change from moment to moment. Only the center is pressed deeply inward to become the bowl. The form was shaped as if carving space out of a solid mass. LAY PETS began by designing wooden pet furniture. Working with clay lets us create sculptural forms that wood could never achieve. Every opening is placed and sized by hand, so no two pieces are ever alike.
