Square Yunomi with Grape Design

A refined black glaze adorns this square yunomi (tea cup), upon which grapes are depicted in a rich, evocative color palette. This piece was crafted using Shigaraki clay on a potter's wheel, with grapes meticulously hand-painted and layered through repeated firings. The "nukie" (resist-glazing) technique is employed, where liquid rubber is used to outline the grapes before glazing, causing the glaze to repel from these areas. The soft, nuanced expression born from peeling away the rubber, combined with the black glaze, creates a warm and deeply textured artwork. The iron glaze used for the grape design was formulated in-house using raw materials sourced from nearby rice fields. The cup is lightweight, comfortable to hold, and features a smooth rim. It beautifully complements the color of any beverage, allowing you to savor your tea or coffee at a leisurely pace. This piece also makes an excellent gift. As you use it, the fine crackling (kannyu) on the interior will develop and deepen, adding to its unique character and charm over time.
