Damascus jewellery is predominantly gold-black or silver-black, and the pre-production process is to first insert gold and silver threads into alloys to carve the pattern, then continuously hammer until the gold leaf completely penetrates the pattern texture, and then bake the oxidized background to black. Damascus is mostly graphic design, but some of the earlier works are more embossed, like this brooch, in an elegant S-shape, supported by two metal flowers with pearls in the middle. There is another relief leaf between the two flowers.
The Damascus style originated in the historic city of Damascus in the Middle East, and later spread to Toledo, Spain and Kyoto, Japan due to war and international trade. People like to combine flowers and leaves, birds and beasts in a freely spiralling and intertwined way into patterns, which is gorgeous and has a mysterious totem feeling.
