Shuifei Sand, Emperor Sand, Zijin Sand, and Crystal Sand are all high-content quality cinnabar. Their **main differences lie in color, texture, hardness, and production methods**.
**"Shuifei Sand"**
**True red, with a slight orange undertone. The surface has a warm, matte finish that will become more lustrous with wear, forming a patina.**
The production method involves repeatedly grinding fine cinnabar particles into a paste, stirring with water, allowing it to settle, collecting the upper "turbid liquid," then allowing it to settle again (the water-grinding purification method). The bottom cinnabar mud is air-dried, then formed using ancient pressing methods. Even on the cross-section, uniform, fine mineral flashes can be seen.
**"Emperor Sand"**
**The color leans towards true red, with a brighter hue and higher hardness.**
The production method involves purifying natural cinnabar ore through multiple processes such as **crushing/grinding/magnetic separation/water-grinding/high polishing**, followed by ancient pressing methods. Emperor Sand has almost no mineral flashes on the surface, but has them internally. The exterior features a **high-polishing process** that creates a metallic texture, especially under sunlight, enhancing its metallic feel.
**"Zijin Sand"**
**The color leans towards purplish-red, with slightly lower hardness than Emperor Sand.**
The production method involves multiple processes such as **crushing/grinding/screening** from natural cinnabar ore, but **without water-grinding purification**. Therefore, the surface is less refined and has scattered small mineral flashes, giving a "starry sky" effect.
**"Crystal Sand"**
**The color leans towards purplish-red and is translucent.**
Large cinnabar particles are directly chipped from the cinnabar ore. The crystals are clearly visible on the surface, and under light, they are transparent, emitting a fluorescent red glow.
> Cinnabar
The earliest written records refer to cinnabar with a single character, "丹" (dān). "丹" is an ideogrammatic character; in ancient times, mining shafts were dug into the earth to extract minerals. Thus, the character "丹" is essentially the character "井" (jǐng, well) with a dot in the middle, signifying something extracted from a dug mine. This substance is cinnabar.
Because cinnabar is red, often a deep red, "朱" (zhū) also means red. Later, "丹砂" (dānshā) became known as cinnabar. "丹" and "朱" describe the color, and "砂" describes the shape, referring to irregularly shaped mineral particles.
The color of cinnabar is long-lasting. Chinese calligraphy and painting are known as "丹青" (dānqīng), where "丹" refers to cinnabar. An indispensable component of pigments, the "Eight Treasures Seal Ink," also has cinnabar as its main ingredient.
From a feng shui perspective, cinnabar is collected from minerals that have absorbed the essence of the sun and moon, absorbing the positive energy of heaven and earth. Therefore, cinnabar possesses a powerful yang magnetic field. We can observe that while jade feels cool in the hand, cinnabar feels warm.
Since ancient times, cinnabar has been used in various Taoist rituals, such as drawing talismans, consecration, warding off evil, and suppressing negative energies. Cinnabar has always been regarded as a supreme item for enhancing luck, averting misfortune, suppressing evil, attracting blessings, and accumulating wealth. It carries auspicious meanings of good fortune and prosperity, wealth, and well-being.
Living in modern times, owning one or two cinnabar artifacts can also cultivate one's character, nourish the eyes, and soothe the heart.
> Care
1. Avoid Corrosion
Cinnabar is a mineral and does not dissolve in water, but frequent contact with chemicals like soap and shower gel can cause corrosion.
2. Avoid Contact with Metal Objects
The mineral elements in cinnabar can absorb metal ions, causing irreversible darkening or blackening.
3. Avoid High Temperatures
The mercury sulfide in cinnabar only releases at temperatures of 380 degrees Celsius. Therefore, as long as you avoid exposing cinnabar jewelry to high-temperature environments, you can wear it with peace of mind.
4. How to Clean
If your cinnabar appears dirty, do not soak it in water, as this can alter its original luster! You can gently wipe it a few times with a slightly damp cotton cloth and let it air dry.
5. Oiling Method for Preservation
Apply a layer of white tea oil or olive oil to the finished product, allowing the stone surface to absorb the oil and become more translucent and bright. If you apply oil and then seal it in a brocade box, you can wrap it in a layer of plastic wrap to prevent the oil from staining the brocade box lining.
6. Frequent Handling
Frequently handle the cinnabar jewelry worn on your body with your hands, allowing a thin layer of natural oils to adhere to the surface. Over time, it will appear more antique and elegant.
