We often get asked, "How is ornamental shuttle embroidery different from regular machine embroidery?" Standard machine embroidery involves a machine reading an embroidery design and automatically stitching it. This results in perfectly uniform, identical embroidery every time. Ornamental shuttle embroidery, on the other hand, is a craft where an artisan manually guides the fabric to create the design. Because it's made by human hands, each piece has its own unique character. No two embroidered designs are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery has a texture that rivals hand-embroidery. It's an astonishingly skillful technique where the artisan transfers a sketch onto the fabric and meticulously stitches it while referring to the original artwork, coordinating the up-and-down motion of the machine needle. Currently, there are only about 400 people in Vietnam who can perform ornamental shuttle embroidery. Of these, only about 50 are actively working as embroiderers. Furthermore, only 30 have passed the highest level (Level 4) of embroidery certification. Among them, merely 10 individuals possess the skill to execute Pangandaran's intricate designs, which are notoriously difficult. However, mere skill isn't enough; embroidery requires a sense of artistry. Even a slight nuance can dramatically alter the overall impression. For this reason, we collaborate with Hun, who possesses the highest level of expertise at Pangandaran. Hun, currently 46 years old, has been embroidering since the age of 15, giving him 31 years of dedicated experience. Moreover, his artistic sensibility is exceptional. We place our complete trust in him. Due to recent economic development, the landscape for traditional crafts in Vietnam, like elsewhere, faces significant challenges. Since 2000, the number of people capable of ornamental shuttle embroidery has drastically declined, with virtually no young individuals learning the craft. The number of artisans is expected to continue decreasing, and Vietnam's ornamental shuttle embroidery art is precariously balanced, facing the risk of disappearing within the next decade or so.
