Hand-drawn botanical illustration · Olive Branch · digital download (no physical item is shipped) I drew the olive branch before the harvest — when the olives are still small and close to the stem, barely distinguishable from the grey-green of the leaves, and the whole branch has a unified, silvery quality that it loses once the fruit ripens and darkens. The colour of the olive in this state is one of the specific colours of the Mediterranean itself: grey-green on the upper surface of the leaf, almost silver-white on the underside, a colour that has been calibrated over millions of years to reflect maximum light in high heat and preserve moisture. In the middle of an August afternoon the leaves turn and flash silver in the slightest breeze, and the whole hillside moves. The olive tree is one of the oldest cultivated plants on earth. Archaeological evidence places olive cultivation at around 6,000 years ago in the eastern Mediterranean, and some individual trees living today — in Crete, in Lebanon, in Palestine, in Sardinia — are believed to be more than 1,000 years old, which means they were already old trees when the medieval cathedrals of Europe were being built. The oil has been used for food, for light, for medicine, for ceremony and for preservation since the Bronze Age. It has shaped the food cultures of an entire sea. I drew the branch with fruit at the small unripe stage because that is when the drawing earns its colour: the grey-green of the leaves, the darker grey-green of the unripe fruit, and the almost invisible pale flowers that sometimes remain. The whole thing is built of green and grey and silver.
