Inspired by this, we wanted to create a Christmas-themed brooch and conceived of the holly brooch. Embroidery thread typically consists of 6 fine strands twisted together to form a single thread. We use a single strand drawn from this bundle. By adjusting the number of strands used, we can vary the size and thickness of the piece. To recreate the characteristic jagged edges of holly leaves, we experimented extensively. For this piece, to express the delicate nature of the leaves, we used a single strand of thread and hand-crocheted them. Wire is incorporated into the leaves as they are hand-crocheted. The berries are individually crafted by wrapping a single strand of deep red embroidery thread around approximately 6mm wood beads.
