He served in the Imperial Painting Academy during the Xianfeng era (mid-19th century). He was skilled in portraiture, as well as in painting flowers, birds, and landscapes. His reputation as an artist was very high, and Empress Dowager Cixi once bestowed upon him a plaque inscribed with "Master of Capturing Likeness" in her own calligraphy.
