When was Hong Kong first named "Hong Kong"? The island was already marked as "Hong Kong" on a maritime chart attached to the Ming Dynasty's *Yue Da Ji* (粵大記), which also shows place names still in use today, such as Shau Kei Wan, Stanley, and Tai Tam. Later, the *Xin'an County Gazetteer* (新安縣志) maritime defense map marked the location of Hong Kong Island as "Hong Xiang Lu" (紅香爐).
A map included in *Form Follows Fever: Malaria and the Construction of Hong Kong, 1841–1849*, published by our press, offers another perspective. In 1810, British surveyors Daniel Ross and Philip Maughan created a map titled *The Macao Roads*, outlining the topography of the Pearl River Delta, which also includes Chinese place names. The location of Hong Kong Island was then labeled as "Hong Kong" (紅江).
From "Hong Kong" (紅江) of that day to "Hong Kong" (香港) today, CUHK Press has specially designed a cylindrical canvas bag using the map from 1810. It features a metal button closure and an adjustable strap, and is printed with a detail from D. Ross and P. Maughan's *The Macao Roads* (1810) map of Hong Kong. It's perfect for carrying small essentials like your phone, wallet, keys, tissues, or a book.
