About Wood Firing
"Wood firing" is a traditional kiln firing method where temperatures exceed 1200°C using firewood.
The natural "fire marks" left directly on the clay body by the flames, along with the ash naturally falling from the burning wood, give the pieces a warm, rich, and varied coloring that cannot be achieved by electric or gas kilns.
Compared to conventional electric and gas kilns, the entire wood firing process—from stacking the kiln, ignition, sealing the kiln, to cooling—takes approximately 8 to 10 days.
Furthermore, the intense kiln pressure, combined with factors like humidity, wood dryness, the speed of stoking the fire, and the placement within the kiln, can all affect the success of a piece, leading to a higher damage rate.
Experienced wood-firing artists meticulously consider the airflow velocity when stacking the kiln, planning the placement of pieces of varying sizes, estimating the path of the flames, how to stoke wood and charcoal, and the precise temperature control. Every step requires utmost focus to bring forth a perfect wood-fired creation.
