The pattern on this paperweight was designed by designer De La Hera Gomez after mathematical and spatial analysis. When you turn it around, it creates a visual illusion, making your brain think that there is sand flowing down from the triangular pile.
"Although the idea for this design is very simple, it took a lot of trial and error," De la Hera Gomez says of his mesmerizing spinner, which transforms a grid pattern into a dynamic, swirling pattern when in motion. "I made and tried over 100 different designs and tested them on a makeshift spinning top. I wanted the spinner to appear to float." The illusion is made from unglazed bone china and features a spinning mechanism that uses ball bearings.
