This sterling silver pendant comes from the late Victorian era in England from the 1870s to the 1890s.
The work is shaped like a plump and cute lentil, which looks small and ordinary, but is actually a lucky symbol with multiple meanings. It is inspired by the classic British folk tale "Jack and the Beanstalk".
"Jack and the Beanstalk" has written records in the 18th century, and oral versions may exist even earlier. The story tells the story of the poor protagonist Jack, who takes a risk and sells the only cow in his family in exchange for a handful of seemingly worthless magic beans. Later, vines magically grow to the sky. Jack then goes on an adventure, defeats giants and brings back wealth. A happy new life.
The story reflects people's expectations for miracles. In a time and space with obvious class differentiation, magic beans have been endowed with multi-layered symbolic meanings due to different contexts, including the symbol of "small opportunities bring big rewards" and encourage people to explore the unknown. At the same time, it also symbolizes the ability to "change destiny", as an unexpected opportunity or a turning point in life.
Coincidentally, many European folktales include stories of beans as a bridge to the supernatural, originating from rural society's imagination and connection between nature and supernatural forces. What these stories have in common is that beans are "small" and "ordinary", symbolizing It raises people's expectations for the source of miracles - happiness may come from the most inconspicuous and ordinary places.
