The Shakisso Coffee we sourced this time comes from this handsome young man! We are extremely, extremely fond of this coffee's flavor profile. It's an achievement we haven't seen in the last five years. How to explain? In the past, it wasn't that difficult to find natural Ethiopian coffees with notes of mango, blueberry, and gummy candy. But they are becoming increasingly rare, and we're not entirely sure why. Yet, this wonderful flavor has returned! Biniyam's great-grandfather began coffee production in the Guji region, and his grandfather established a washing station there. Incidentally, it's rumored to be the first privately owned washing station in the Guji region. Later, his father established an export coffee company in 1998. These three generations have successfully written a glorious chapter in Ethiopian coffee history. Currently, Nardos Coffee operates 9 washing stations and 6 dry processing stations across Guji, Yirgacheffe, and Uraga, with 115 full-time employees working in these areas. "Their greatest strength lies in the fact that all their family members and relatives are coffee producers. Biniyam grew up surrounded by farms, and you can see farms wherever you go within the Aklilu family. Therefore, he has an intimate understanding of coffee. Incidentally, his great-grandfather had over 15 children, and he divided all his farmland among them, so the farms Biniyam currently owns are not very large." In 2018, Biniyam embarked on a new path. Ethiopia, a traditional coffee-producing nation, is currently undergoing significant transformation. The relaxation of ECX regulations, the emergence of the Cup of Excellence, and other factors are stimulating the younger generation's interest in coffee production. He founded his own company, Gujoo Trading. It's said that the impetus for its founding was his marriage and the birth of his child. As Biniyam began his journey into family life, he started his own business to focus on his career. After hearing his explanation, I understood the reasons even better. "We only establish washing stations above 2,000 meters above sea level and adhere to strict timelines for fermentation and drying. To prevent over-drying, we cool the harvested coffee slightly before transporting it to the warehouse. The accumulation of these small efforts makes a big difference in coffee quality." Currently, Gujoo Trading operates only one washing station, but they plan to expand to two more next year. At that time, we purchased several coffees from Caravera Coffee (UK-based), but unfortunately, the volume was insufficient, making communication and product integration difficult, so we discontinued it. Subsequently, Sidang Coffee continued to primarily source from Taiwanese green bean importers. Both are good methods, but if "direct trade from origin" is possible, that is naturally the path we wish to take, as it is the business model that best ensures everyone benefits! Direct trade from origin means: "Importing coffee without intermediaries, where producers and roasters establish direct relationships and conduct transactions and imports with price transparency."
