Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty (known as Venus in Roman mythology), was captivatingly beautiful; even her statues inspired adoration. However, due to a conflict between Hera, the queen of the gods, and her son Hephaestus, the god of fire and craftsmanship, Aphrodite was betrothed by Hera to the unattractive Hephaestus. Yet, the romantic Aphrodite could not bear the monotony of Hephaestus's constant blacksmithing and fell in love with his younger brother, Ares, the god of war. Together, they conceived Eros (Cupid), the widely known god of love with his bow and arrows. One day, Aphrodite took her son Eros to a banquet for the gods. Pan, the god of the wilderness and shepherds, who was invited to play the panpipes for the deities, performed with such fervor that his beautiful melodies echoed through the heavens and earth. This, however, attracted the monstrous Typhon, a creature born of Mother Earth with one hundred fire-breathing dragon heads, so terrifying that even the gods dared not confront it. This unleashed chaos upon the banquet. In the confusion, Eros became separated from his mother. Aphrodite frantically searched for her son. Later, she found the trembling Eros beneath a table. She then tied one end of a ribbon to her son's foot and the other to her own, transforming themselves into two fish before fleeing the banquet. The image of Aphrodite and her son Eros as two fish later formed the constellation Pisces.
