Among the variations in color, the most significant in gemstones is the "play-of-color" in opals. Opal, derived from the Latin word "opalus," meaning "to gather the beauty of gemstones," is renowned worldwide for its magical and beautiful play-of-color effect. It is also a symbol of nobility and status. The famous English playwright Shakespeare once described opal as "this miracle, the queen of gems." Its colors are incredibly diverse, displaying different color changes from various angles. Each piece of opal is unique, making it highly collectible. Opals come in various types, including black opal, white opal (crystal opal), fire opal, and matrix opal. Opals are composed of silica spheres, which are too small to be seen with the naked eye and require an electron microscope. These color variations are caused by diffraction and interference – a complex interaction of light with these spherical structures, like a playful dance! **Opal Care and Storage** If you have purchased natural opal or pearl gemstones, please be mindful to avoid environments that are too humid or experience extreme temperature fluctuations. Temperature and humidity can accelerate the decomposition or oxidation of organic gemstones. Due to the hardness and formation of organic gemstones, please avoid hot springs and saunas, as well as products containing cleaning agents. Opal is a delicate gemstone that actually requires a bit of moisture for its beauty. Therefore, we do not include desiccants in our jewelry pouches. Like other gemstones, it should not be worn during bathing or when visiting hot springs. Do not use silver polishing cloths to clean opals; simply wipe them with a clean, dry cloth or a slightly damp cloth. We will provide a jewelry polishing cloth. After wearing, gently wipe the ring clean and store it in the gemstone pouch. For all natural gemstone and metal jewelry, it is not recommended to wear them while bathing or visiting hot springs, as chemicals can cause adverse reactions. Avoid direct contact with perfumes and bleach. Please also refrain from storing jewelry in bathrooms or kitchens, as this can accelerate product oxidation. When not wearing sterling silver or gold jewelry, try to minimize exposure to moisture and air. Wipe them clean with a dry cloth or the provided polishing cloth, then store them in a PVC zipper bag. Each piece of jewelry should be stored separately to prevent scratches from colliding with other jewelry or hard objects. Japanese imported desiccant is included in the zipper bags. **Natural Stone Inclusions** The natural stones used in the NOW Design Studio are collected from around the world, each one unique, with most being one-of-a-kind pieces. These are specially selected natural stones, and we present their colors under different angles or lighting conditions to our clients. Natural stones may have internal impurities (inclusions), which are unavoidable. If this is a concern, we do not recommend purchasing.
