Utagawa Hiroshige II, originally named Suzuki Tatsuhei, was one of the most outstanding disciples of the first Utagawa Hiroshige. He inherited his master's artistic style and name, and after his master's passing, he married into the Ando family, becoming the successor to the "Hiroshige" title. In his later years, he called himself Shoku Sanjin Isshō.
"White Cat Playing with a String" is a woodblock print created by Utagawa Hiroshige II in 1863, notable for its rare fan-shaped composition. The artwork depicts a plump, white bobtail cat, playfully biting a blue string. Crouching on its hind legs with its front paws poised, the cat appears ready to pounce in the next moment, exuding a sense of dynamic playfulness.
This piece showcases Utagawa Hiroshige II's keen observation of domestic cat behavior. Beyond inheriting the style of his predecessor, it reveals his developing personal touch and sense of humor. The composition is simple yet full of tension, bringing a knowing smile to the viewer's face.
The brooch measures approximately 4*3 cm.
