This trip to Kyoto brought encounters with many wonderful people and things. It not only allowed me to rediscover the savor of living well but also to witness the ancient capital's dedication to and innovation in traditional culture and craftsmanship. What captured my heart at first sight were the *gamaguchi* purses crafted by a kimono artisan. Mr. Nakamura, a man of humble demeanor and gentle grace, has retired from the world of kimono making. However, he continues to create *gamaguchi* purses designed with kimono fabrics he has cherished his entire life.
◾️【Premium Kimono Tsumugi Series】
The spirit of a lifetime's dedication is fully expressed in the details and material selection. This piece features Kyoto's exquisite craft, *Kanoko Shibori* tie-dyeing. Named for its resemblance to the patterns on a fawn, this hand-dyeing process is exceptionally complex and refined, resulting in truly unique colors and patterns. Consequently, this style is very rare, making each piece a treasure to be cherished as a once-in-a-lifetime encounter.
Mr. Nakamura's *gamaguchi* purses stand in stark contrast to those made from synthetic fibers or cotton fabric found elsewhere. Even accessories should be as refined as fine jewelry, withstanding scrutiny. He shared, "Use it gently; the texture will become even softer with time."
One can only say, people in Kyoto truly appreciate and use fine things! No wonder they feel such pride in their city. We are grateful to Mr. Nakamura for kindly agreeing to craft a special batch for us. I must be honest: compared to the myriad of *gamaguchi* purses available, the initial pricing might seem a bit high. At first, I was merely drawn to its appearance, not paying much mind to the premium kimono fabric or the intricate clasp, which I took for granted. However, after bringing it home and using it, I truly understood its value. With every opening and closing, I can't help but marvel, growing more fond of it the longer I look. If you have the chance to hold one, you will understand what an art-piece level *gamaguchi* purse truly is; it will undoubtedly inspire you to collect more!
