During the late Edo period, under the sumptuary law "Noka Kensaku Bungen Rei" (Regulation on the Frugality of Farmers), commoners were prohibited from using cotton fabric. However, clothing made from hemp could not withstand the long, snowy, and cold climate of Japan's northeastern region. Farmers then threaded yarn through the gaps in the hemp fabric to improve its insulation and durability, thus giving rise to "Kogin embroidery." This embroidery method requires counting the warp threads of the fabric (simply put, counting the squares) and executing satin stitches row by row. If even a single square is stitched incorrectly, the entire piece must be unraveled and restarted. Therefore, every stitch in Kogin embroidery is a test of keen eyesight and patience, representing a delicate yet persistent craft. The shop owner has selected a Kogin-specific fabric with smaller squares, resulting in denser and fuller embroidered patterns.
