Blue and white bowl from a folk kiln during the Japanese colonial period in Taiwan│Beitou ware and Datun ware are elegant and simple, and bring peace of mind
◤Beitou Ceramic System
During the Japanese colonial period, it was most famous for its ceramic products such as "Beitou ware" and "Datun ware". Located on the bank of Datun Mountain, it not only benefits from volcanic geothermal heat, but also produces high-quality kaolin (white clay). It is said that there were kilns operating in Beitou during the Qing Dynasty, but their production capacity and technology were not mature until 1896 in Kyoto, Japan. The descendants of "Kyo-yaki" - Daiyama Yubei came to Beitou to establish a kiln and introduced Japanese porcelain-burning technology to Beitou. In 1907, Kametaro Matsumoto established the "Beitou Pottery Factory" and specially hired Kyoto pottery masters to come to Taiwan to teach the art and make vases, teacups and other utensils. The style was mainly elegant and popular among the general public. It was called "Beitou Pottery". ”. In 1923, Saburo Kamoto established the "Datun Pottery Factory" in Beitou, with the production of "crane pattern bowls" and other tableware as its main features. It was called "Datun Pottery" as well as "Beitou Pottery". After the liberation of Taiwan, these pottery factories established during the Japanese colonial period were taken over and managed by the Taiwan Industrial and Mining Corporation, which continued the development of various ceramic products based on the foundations of the Japanese colonial period. However, the good times did not last long. Due to excessive local soil mining and severe damage caused by the typhoon in 1977, the government issued an order banning Beitou soil mining. The subsequent closure of the Taiwan Industrial and Mining Company affected the decline of Beitou's ceramic industry, and it has since gradually faded into people's memory.
◤
During the Japanese colonial period, many of the rice bowls commonly used in Taiwanese households were in the shape of an open inverted parabola; the thick ring at the bottom of the bowl had a heat-insulating effect, and the soil was thick and durable.
Most of these bowls are made with hand-painted blue and white horizontal lines, and then a rubber stamp is dipped in green material to cover groups of strong lines, showing a criss-cross pattern. The bottom of the bowl is stamped with the word "福" in blue and white, which symbolizes eating. Always cherish blessings. In Taiwan, there is an industry that specializes in renting out bowls and plates when setting up tables, and the company name will be printed on the bowls and plates for identification.

The maintenance methods of porcelain are as follows:
1. Wash by hand when cleaning, because the glaze of porcelain is delicate and can be easily scratched. Remember not to use a rough cloth to clean the porcelain surface to avoid scratches.
2. Clean the porcelain with water. The water temperature should not exceed 70 degrees, and do not soak the porcelain in hot water for too long to avoid affecting the appearance of the porcelain.
3. After cleaning the porcelain, let it air dry naturally or wipe it with a soft cloth. Do not put it in drying equipment such as high-temperature sterilization cupboards.
4. If there are stains on the porcelain, it is best to wash them off immediately. Do not let the stains stay on the porcelain for a long time. If the porcelain is stained by tea or coffee, you can use lemon juice or vinegar to clean it.
5. When cleaning porcelain in winter, the water temperature needs to be controlled to prevent the porcelain from exploding due to freezing or exposure to hot water. It is best to use wooden or plastic basins to clean porcelain. Avoid using porcelain and Cement basins to avoid damage to the porcelain.
