Macrame originated in the 13th century from the Arabic word "migramah," meaning "a woven fringe." The Moors later introduced Macrame to France, and from there it spread throughout Europe. It was introduced to England in the late 17th century and became highly popular during the Victorian era, often used for home decor.

The first step in Macrame: a method for securing cords to a dowel.
* Square Knot
A knot used extensively in many pieces, akin to the flat-fill technique in sketching.
* Spiral Knot
A knot that twists to the left or right, creating a sense of depth.
* Half Hitch Knot / Canyoning Knot
Used to create clean, defined lines. With skillful execution, it can also produce wavy patterns or any desired shape.
It is also used at the beginning or end to secure the cords and prevent unraveling.
