During my time in Taipei I've realized that there's something a bit different about Tianmu. The people who live there seem to become more deeply connected to the place in a way I've only noticed happen with a couple of other districts. I'm frequently contacted by people who, having left the area, want something to help keep that connection alive, or simply remember the great times they've had there. It was in that vein that this piece was commisisioned and I'm excited to offer prints of it!
The district is full of dense high rises but it's also nestled between forested hills with large areas of parkland. It was one of the first areas in the city to have an expat population and it's still a popular place for foreigners to live. One of the early buildings from the first wave of expats, the Tianmu White House, features near the center of the drawing. Other recognizble places include the American and Japanese schools, Tianmu Baseball Stadium, Takeshima Department Store, Veterans Hospital, and Tianmu Park.
This map was originally drawn in pencil and took well over 150 hours to create. It's at a close enough scale that you should be able to recognize individual windows.
