◎ Tridacna is a rare organic gemstone, with a whiteness akin to jade, and is also a sacred Buddhist object. Tridacna is the largest among marine shells, with diameters reaching up to 1.8m. The name Tridacna originated in the Han Dynasty, named for the radiating grooves on its shell's surface, resembling ancient chariot tracks, hence "che qu" (chariot rut). Later generations added the character for stone due to its hardness. Tridacna, pearls, coral, and amber are known as the four great organic gemstones in the West. In Chinese Buddhism, along with gold, silver, lapis lazuli, agate, pearls, and amber, it is revered as one of the Seven Treasures.
Types of Tridacna:
These include un-gemmed (porcelain white), semi-gemmed (milky white), fully gemmed (translucent white) Tridacna, yellow Tridacna [often with cracks], blood red Tridacna, golden silk Tridacna, and patterned silk Tridacna. Among these, patterned silk, yellow, blood red, and gemmed Tridacna are the most precious. Some "gemmed" Tridacna on the market are treated with chemical bleaches, obscuring the natural texture of the Tridacna itself. Natural Tridacna cannot be perfectly identical to each other.
Tridacna Care Instructions:
(1) Tridacna is an organic mineral, primarily composed of calcium carbonate. Therefore, it should not be exposed to acid for extended periods. It requires regular cleaning with fresh water to maintain its luster.
(2) Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, as this can lead to cracking.
(3) Applying oil periodically can help protect the surface.
