Tridacna is the largest of all marine shells, reaching diameters of up to 1.8 meters. The name "Tridacna" originated in the Han Dynasty; because the surface of the shell features radiating grooves resembling ancient wheel tracks (che-qu), it was named accordingly. Later, because of its stone-like hardness, the character for "stone" was added to the side of the name. Tridacna, pearl, coral, and amber are revered in the West as the four major organic gemstones, while in Chinese Buddhism, they are honored alongside gold, silver, lapis lazuli, agate, pearl, and amber as one of the Seven Treasures. Tridacna Varieties: Varieties include non-jade-like Tridacna (porcelain white), semi-jade-like Tridacna (milky white), fully jade-like Tridacna (translucent white), yellow Tridacna [often with cracks], blood Tridacna, golden silk Tridacna, and floral silk Tridacna. Among these, floral silk, yellow, blood, and jade-like Tridacna are the most precious. Some "jade-like" Tridacna on the market have been treated with chemical bleaching agents, which obscure the natural texture of the shell. No two pieces of natural Tridacna are exactly alike.
