In the traditional, narrow sense, it specifically refers to jade originating from the Hetian region of Xinjiang, with the "seedling jade" from Hetian being world-renowned. In a broader sense, Hetian Jade refers to nephrite (true jade). When Qin Shi Huang unified China, Hetian Jade was known as "Kunlun Mountain Jade" because it was produced in the Kunlun Mountains. Later, it was called "Yutian Jade" as it was located within the territory of the "Yutian Kingdom." It was only in the ninth year of the Qing Dynasty's Guangxu reign (1883), when the Hetian Direct Rule Prefecture was established, that it was officially named "Hetian Jade." Hetian Jade is a metamorphic rock formed by the contact and metasomatism of magnesian marble and intermediate-acidic magmatic rocks. It contains an aggregate of minerals such as tremolite, actinolite, and pargasite. Its chemical composition is a hydrated calcium magnesium silicate, with the chemical formula Ca2(Mg,Fe)5[Si8O22](OH)2. Its density ranges from 2.95 to 3.17, and its Mohs hardness is between 6.0 and 6.5. The primary structure of Hetian Jade is metamorphic. This includes felt-like cryptocrystalline metamorphic structure, microfibrous-cryptocrystalline metamorphic structure, microfibrous-crystalline metamorphic structure, micro-flaky-cryptocrystalline metamorphic structure, micro-flaky metamorphic structure, and micro-radial (tufted) metamorphic structure. Less common structures include residual filamentary structure and replacement coralloid structure. Although the mineral grains in Hetian Jade exhibit some degree of orientation, it is not strong. Occasionally, grains show undulatory extinction phenomena and plastic deformation. These indicate that the stress intensity during metamorphism was within the elastic limit of the minerals.
