About Wood Firing Wood firing is a traditional kiln technique that reaches temperatures exceeding 1200°C. The direct flame from the wood leaves natural "fire marks" on the pottery, and the ash from the burning wood creates rich, warm tones and varied textures that electric or gas kilns cannot replicate. Compared to conventional electric or gas kilns, the wood firing process—from stacking the kiln, ignition, sealing the kiln, to cooling—takes approximately 8-10 days. Furthermore, the intense kiln pressure, along with factors like humidity, wood dryness, the speed of wood addition, and kiln placement, can significantly impact the success of a piece, leading to a higher breakage rate. Experienced wood-firing artisans meticulously consider airflow, the placement of pieces of varying sizes, the estimated path of the flames, the timing and quantity of wood and charcoal added, and the precise control of heat.
