(BK 01) About the Artwork: This collection, 【Les jolies femmes de Paris】, originally comprised illustrations by French artist Charles Edouard de Beaumont (1812 ~ 1888) for a Parisian periodical. Later, the Aubert publishing house gathered these illustrations, reprinted them as art prints, and commissioned artisans to meticulously hand-color each one, transforming the original black and white lithographs into vibrant, colorful depictions. In Beaumont's hands, the diverse expressions, fashions, and daily moments of Parisian women come alive, establishing this work as a significant record of the era's high society customs. Charles Edouard de Beaumont was a remarkable talent in 19th-century Parisian art circles. Born in Lannion in 1821, his father, a sculptor, imparted drawing techniques and enrolled him under the tutelage of painter Antoine Felix Boisselier (1790~1857). Boisselier, skilled in historical and landscape painting, provided Beaumont with a solid foundation. Influenced by this environment, Beaumont initially gained recognition for his landscape paintings, debuting at the Salon exhibition in 1838. He soon turned to mythological themes, carving out his unique artistic niche. His depictions of women were characterized by elegance and charm, with a pure use of color. Whether in watercolor or oil, his works showcased exceptional artistic ingenuity, earning the admiration of collectors. During this period, he also contributed illustrations to periodicals, leading to the creation of 《Les jolies femmes de Paris》. However, Beaumont's sensitive nature meant that repeated exhibition entries, without the desired recognition, led to a growing sense of melancholy. It wasn't until he was nearly fifty that he received his first medal for artistic achievement, but this did little to lift his spirits. Comforted by his close friend, the renowned author Alexandre Dumas (1802 ~ 1870), Beaumont shifted his focus away from exhibition goals, choosing a more solitary path to concentrate on his artistic pursuits. In 1877, his masterpiece 【A Nest of Sirens】 caused a sensation at the Salon. The painting depicted a scene where sirens lure Ulysses' returning ship onto the rocks, an artwork that fully revealed his profound interpretation of feminine beauty and form.
