<Gemstone Trivia 1> Watermelon Mica
Watermelon Mica gets its name from its overall appearance, resembling the frothy bubbles on the surface of water as it tumbles from a height. It is both crystal clear and often contains small internal "stone flowers" or cotton-like inclusions, hence its name. Its main mineral composition is sodic feldspar combined with quartz. It typically has excellent "water content" (translucency), which is a crucial characteristic. Its primary colors are grayish-white or white, while yellow, red, black, and green varieties are rarer.
Due to the excellent translucency and clarity of high-quality Watermelon Mica, unscrupulous merchants have been known to pass it off as high-quality jade in recent years, selling it at inflated prices. Therefore, special attention is advised!
<Gemstone Trivia 2> Purple Mica
The formal scientific name for Purple Mica is Rosasite, possessing beautiful blue-purple tones, much like a violet, making it exceptionally lovely. Sometimes, different shades like yellowish-brown and white can appear in its color bands and patches. Thus, Purple Mica is considered best when free from yellow spots and white inclusions. Generally, the fewer cracks and white line impurities, and the more beautiful the color, the better. However, Purple Mica has a relatively lower hardness, so it's advisable to avoid vigorous rubbing.
<Gemstone Trivia 3> Tourmaline (Bi Xi)
Tourmaline, also known as Bi Xi, boasts a dazzling array of colors due to its complex chemical composition. It ranges from red, pink, yellow, orange, green, blue, to black, earning it the nickname "the rainbow fallen to earth." In ancient China, Bi Xi was cherished for its vibrant colors and beauty, with the most famous admirer being Empress Dowager Cixi of the Qing Dynasty. Many Bi Xi ornaments were discovered among her funerary objects, including the charming "watermelon tourmaline" with its green exterior and red interior.
When selecting Tourmaline, in addition to paying attention to its clarity and the richness of its hue, it's crucial to consider its internal cleanliness, as Tourmaline is prone to internal cracks and inclusions. Furthermore, although Tourmaline has sufficient hardness, it is relatively brittle. Therefore, when wearing it, be cautious and try to avoid contact with sharp objects or strong impacts.
