Introduction: "shanchiart" studio acquired a batch of wild, old-stock Borneo agarwood in its early days, including resinous parts from tree heads, roots, cores, and branches, each possessing a unique charm. As this batch was kept intact and unprocessed, we recently cleaned off surface dirt, air-dried it, and are now sharing it with those who appreciate it. Among the Singaporean series of agarwood, Borneo is considered one of the finest producing regions. This vast island in Indonesia occupies nearly three-quarters of Borneo, about 15 times the size of Taiwan. Indonesia's Borneo boasts rich primeval forests, with agarwood trees thriving near the equator. Long daylight hours and abundant rainfall contribute to rapid, tall tree growth. When injured, these trees readily form resinous deposits over large areas, resulting in clear grain patterns, making it a superior material for bracelets and carvings. Besides classification by region, agarwood from different parts of the same tree can exhibit distinct characteristics. The formation of wild agarwood is due to natural environmental factors like windstorms, lightning strikes, and insect infestations, which cause infections. The tree then secretes resin in response to these infections, forming agarwood. Typically, it takes centuries to form high-quality agarwood, making it extremely rare, hence the saying: "A hundred years for sandalwood, a thousand years for agarwood." Due to the numerous lakes and swamps in Borneo, filled with decaying flora and fauna and producing methane, this batch of agarwood, after formation, fell into soil, lakes, and swamps. Most of it is "fallen wood material." After prolonged fermentation and decomposition, the scent carries earthy and musky notes, with some pieces exhibiting carbonization on the surface. However, after thorough washing and professional silk-thread processing, the dried wild Borneo agarwood releases a layered fragrance. It possesses a fresh herbal aroma, a rich woody scent, and subtle hints of spice and sweetness. These fragrances evolve over time. This batch of wild, old-stock Borneo agarwood is dense, with colors ranging from dark brown to blackish-brown, or even earthy yellow. The wood itself is darker, with a natural luster and distinct, dark oil lines, a result of resin deposition within the wood. It features natural, fine grain patterns. The high oil content makes it dense, causing it to sink in water. Areas rich in oil deposition often appear darker. Burning it clearly reveals the process of oil release. While this batch from Borneo is not the absolute finest agarwood, slightly inferior to renowned sources like Vietnam, it emits a serene fragrance upon burning, with phased changes that bring peace and tranquility. Its affordable price and high cost-effectiveness make it an excellent choice for beginners! Overall, this wild, old-stock Borneo agarwood is thoroughly dried, old material, rich in oil, and substantial.
