What is "Sometsuke"?
"Sometsuke" is an underglaze coloring technique that uses "blue" dye for drawing. "Tsuke" means "pattern," thus "drawing patterns with blue dye."
Common in Chinese Ming and Qing Dynasty blue and white porcelain, in Japan, it is showcased on the exceptionally white and light Arita ware. The resulting blue is remarkably clean, reminiscent of indigo-dyed fabric, hence the name "Sometsuke."
This ceramic technique involves glazing a fired bisque (semi-finished product) and then firing it once at high temperature. Controlling color variations is extremely difficult, making it a painting and coloring method that requires significant skill and experience. Although this limits the choice of suitable pigments, the finished pattern is covered with a transparent glaze, giving the ceramic surface a smooth and exceptionally bright texture. Combined with the unique whiteness and lightness of Arita ware, the entire vessel appears exceptionally clear and crystal-like, resistant to wear, and very suitable for everyday use.
This Sometsuke Rim Line Square Plate from Keizan Gama features a serene blue hue paired with clean, hand-drawn lines. Unlike the rigid and lifeless appearance of factory-made items, it possesses the warm and approachable charm unique to handmade pieces, exuding an unparalleled allure.
Whether paired with Japanese cuisine or everyday Chinese home-style dishes, the clean and elegant Sometsuke porcelain serves as a backdrop that particularly highlights the warmth and aesthetic of home-cooked meals.
The Arita ware plates have rounded rims and a delicate texture, making them excellent for food presentation. Even the simplest dishes can easily achieve a refined look, suggesting thoughtful preparation. This brings the joy of a beautiful dining ritual into your home, enhancing your table setting and bringing a sense of comfortable living aesthetics.

About Arita Ware
Arita ware originates from Saga Prefecture, the birthplace of Japanese ceramics. It even became popular in Europe in the 1650s, opening up an international perspective for Japanese ceramics. Its most distinctive feature is its white and light texture, a delicate yet hard quality akin to glass, offering an astonishing ceramic performance. Coupled with ornate Japanese pattern designs, it was highly favored by European aristocrats at the time.
For 400 years, the tradition and innovation of Arita ware have cultivated Japan's unique aesthetic consciousness. Since 2016, new endeavors like the SAGAMA project have been initiated, showcasing more combinations of modern and traditional craftsmanship.
