Lanyu Marine Debris Buoy - Totem Edition Painted Green Sea Turtle Buoy
A collaborative creation by <Island Painting Class> and <Marine Debris Shop>
Lanyu is a volcanic island with a predominantly rocky coastline and fewer sandy shores. Consequently, marine debris carried by ocean currents often gets caught in the reef areas.
Our beach cleanups with island partners began in 2012 and continue to this day. Over these past ten-plus years, beyond collecting marine debris along the coastlines of various communities and sorting it into recyclable and non-recyclable categories, we have also, in recent years, specifically selected usable fishing buoys from the piles of collected debris, cleaned them, and categorized them. Our hope is to alleviate the burden on the island's already saturated landfills and to give marine waste new life through regeneration and reuse...
Each marine debris buoy has journeyed across the ocean from different regions (such as South Korea, China, Japan, etc.) carried by the Kuroshio Current and other ocean flows. If you look closely, you can actually see different languages printed on each buoy. Due to variations in material and size, and because each one is hand-painted stroke by stroke, every painted marine debris buoy is truly unique.
With the purchase of a regenerated marine debris buoy, you will receive a postcard (as shown in image two) as a gift.
