During the Christmas holidays of 1894, the renowned stage actress Sarah Bernhardt was troubled by the lack of a designer for the promotional poster of her new play, "Gismonda." "Gismonda" was a work by the French playwright Victorien Sardou, set in 13th-century Athens.
At the time, Mucha had lost his patron and was subsisting on income from illustrating. By chance, he was urgently commissioned by a printing house to take on this task. He depicted Sarah as a Byzantine noblewoman, highlighting her distinct, noble beauty.
Upon the release of this large lithograph poster created for the musical play, it not only deeply pleased Sarah but also captivated and enthralled the Parisian public, solidifying Mucha's status as a master artist.
