You might often wonder, "How is 《freehand embroidery》 different from regular machine embroidery?" Standard machine embroidery is automated; the machine reads the design and stitches it automatically, resulting in perfectly uniform and identical pieces. In contrast, 《freehand embroidery》 is an artisan skill where the craftsperson manually moves the fabric to create the design. Because it's made by human hands, each piece has its own unique character. No two embroidered pieces are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery has a texture that resembles hand-stitching. It's an incredible craft that involves transferring the sketch to the fabric, referencing the original artwork, and stitching while coordinating the up-and-down motion of the sewing machine needle – just imagining it is impressive. Currently, there are only about 400 people in Vietnam who can perform freehand embroidery. Of those, only 50 work professionally. And among them, just 30 have passed the highest embroidery certification level, Level 4. Within this elite group, only 10 can execute the intricate embroidery required by Pangandaran. However, being skilled isn't enough; embroidery also requires a sense of artistry. Subtle nuances can significantly alter the overall impression. For this reason, at Pangandaran, we entrust our work to Hun, a master artisan. Hun, now 46, has been practicing this craft since the age of 15, making him a veteran of 31 years. Moreover, he possesses an exceptional artistic sense. We have complete faith in his abilities. With Vietnam's economic development, traditional crafts, like elsewhere, face challenging circumstances. Since 2000, the number of individuals capable of freehand embroidery has been rapidly declining. While there used to be schools for this art, now skilled artisans train apprentices. Hun has taught four individuals, but he notes that few young people today can master the technique. Due to rapid economic growth, manual crafts are being left behind, and the number of artisans is expected to decrease further. This trend is accelerating faster than in Japan, and the national systems offer little protection. Consequently, Vietnam's freehand embroidery is on the brink of disappearing within the next decade or so. In this video, we were fortunate to have the skilled artisan Hun create the "Sudden Rain" embroidery. Witness the beauty of embroidery brought to life with his assured technique.
