Artist: Mark Grotjahn Mark Grotjahn (b. 1968, Pasadena; lives and works in Los Angeles) is one of the most celebrated American painters of his generation. His idiosyncratic works include depictions of anthropomorphic plants and masks, as well as colorful abstract compositions in oil or pastel. After 1997, he also created countless monochrome paintings. Grotjahn’s “Butterfly” and “Faces” paintings are animated by a dynamic dialectic between gestural representation and formalist structure. The lavishly designed book Circus Circus presents a selection of paintings from Grotjahn's new "Circus" series as well as the "Mask" bronze sculptures. The ambitious polychromatic work combines the geometric rigor of the "Butterfly" series with the gestural production of the "Face" pictures, in which primary facial symbols emerge from flowing streams of color. Caroline K ding and Mark Prince's article analyzes the "Circus" series in terms of painterly tradition and examines its place in Grotjahn's oeuvre.
